silver egg cup - Germany





German silver egg cup this is a silver petal form egg cup with gilt interior made in Germany about the middle of the 19th century. It is engraved with an Earl's coronet and crest and another family crest on opposite side.
The egg holder is marked '13' correspondiing to '13 lot' purity degree (812,5/1000) and silversmith's hallmark ( PROL? ). Very probably Friedrich Proll (1787-1864), Master 1824, of Kassel, Germany. Ref: Reiner Neuhaus, Kassel Silver, p. 316, #217 (courtesy Charles C. Cage).
It is 2 3/4 in. tall (cm. 7) and was bought from an US dealer through the Internet.
