silver napkin ring - Finland

Continental antique silver napkin ring this is a Continental silver napkin ring decorated with applied bunches and grape leaves, in a floral style anticipating of many years the 'Art Nouveau era'.
It is monogrammed E.W. and has Finnish hallmarks, left to right:
- a boat: city mark of Helsinki;
- a crown: state mark of Finland;
- RM upside down: mark of maker Roland Mellin, working 1833-1867;
- W2: date letter for 1854.
(ref: Raimo Fagerstrom, 'Hopeaa, p. 193, Helsinki #47: courtesy Charles C. Cage)
There are very few Georgian examples left, and the vast majority of silver napkin rings were made after 1850. This 1854 napkin ring, of uncommon origin, is one of the earliest examples I've ever seen.
The napkin ring is 1 in. high (cm. 3), has a diameter of 2 1/8 in. (cm. 5,5) and was bought from an Italian dealer in an Antique Market
