Hamilton & Inches silver mether cup - Scotland
this little silver mether cup (or christening mug) standing on four buttress feet was made in Edimburgh (Scotland-UK) in 1909 by silversmith Hamilton & Inches. The bowl has a shape inspired to the Celtic taste referable to the School of Glasgow and the architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The bowl is 2 3/4 in. high (cm. 7) and was bought from an Italian dealer at an Antique Fair. A very similar mether manufactured by Hamilton and Inches was presented to the Edinburgh Academy as a piping trophy cup. It was awarded in 1918 by Major Allen Sloan and Captain Lawrence Sloan, the brothers of the late Thomas Ian Thomson Sloan, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, who was killed in action during the Great War. Known as the Ian Sloan Cup, it is still awarded to this day (information courtesy Alan Fyfe -1957/69- Academical Club Secretary)This item is not for sale, but most of my pieces were bought through the Internet.
