W.H. SAART CO SAART BROS.COMPANY - Attleboro, MA Manufacturer of sterling and silverplate holloware, novelties and various flatware patterns under the mark SSMC. Company founded by William H. Saart and his brothers Albert and Herman succeeding to W.H. Saart Co. In early 1900 acquired the dies of Sterling Silver Manufacturing Co. Saart Bros was incorporated in 1906. In 1937 the company was under the control of Frank E. Nolan and in 1975 the business was managed by R.J. Nolan as president. |

WILLIAM SCHIMPER & CO - New York, NY and Hoboken, NJ Founded by German immigrant George Schimper working in the metal plating business in late 1850s. In 1867, his sons William and Theodore continued the business as the Schimper Brothers. On the death of Theodore in the early 1880s, William Schimper became the sole owner and the company was renamed William Schimpel & Co. when Robert Debacher and, later, J.T. Mahisted entered in the partnership. From 1884 they manufactured brass goods components such as locks and frames for pocket books and handbags as well as picture frames. After the death of William Schimper (1900) the ownership was bought by R.R. Debacher and another partner maintaining the same name. The company manufactured vanity cases, hand mirrors, toilet sets, powder boxes and a variety of metal novelties in its Hoboken, NJ factory. They ceased activity c. 1927 |

In the 1930s the name was changed to Schofield Co Inc. After the death of Frank (1947) the business was run by his wife Berthe (also a silversmith) until 1965 when the company was bought by Oscar Caplan & Sons and by Stieff Co in 1967 |

SCHULZ & FISCHER - San Francisco, CA A partnership of German immigrant silversmiths Wilhelm Schulz (from Prussia) and Emil Fischer (from Saxony) active 1874-c. 1888. Employing 22 workers in 1882 was considered to be the heaviest manufacturing house among San Francisco silversmiths. Their predecessors were Schulz, Fischer & Mohrig (1868-1869) and Fisher & Schulz (1869-1874). Their holloware was marked with the California State Seal.
Schulz & Fischer was succeded by Schulz, Fischer & McCartney (1883-1888) and Schulz & McCartney (1888-1893). After the closure of the business (c.1900) Shreve & Co acquired part of its flatware dies. |

ALFREDO SCIARROTTA - Newport, RI An Italian silversmith (1907-1985) smuggled out of Italy into the US during World War II to work on submarine technology. Afterwards, he settled in Newport, RI and created a small line of hand-made sterling silver hollowware. He sold them from his own shop and eventually retailed them through exclusive stores including Shreve, Crump & Low, Gorham, Bailey, Banks & Biddle and Cartier. Sciarrotta silver is included in several major museum collections of decorative arts, including the Smithsonian. |

In 1917 he was working as a jeweler in Oakland, California. By 1918 he was a gold and silverware manufacturer at 821 Santee Street, Los Angeles, California. |

GEORGE B. SHARP - Philadelphia, PA Active in the 1850s working exclusively as shop superintendent for the firm Bailey & Co.. The pieces made in this period are correctly identified as "Bailey & Co." silver and does not become "George Sharp (for Bailey & Co.)" until 1867 when Sharp started his own shop. Sharp went out of business in 1874. The silver marked "lion S shield" (made in the period 1852-1866) should therefore be correctly attributed to Bailey & Co |

SHEPARD MFG CO - Melrose, Highlands, MA Founded and managed by Chester Shepard and his son Chester B. Shepard. The firm manufactured about one hundred varieties of souvenir spoons but its production embraced also napkin rings and other fancy articles in flat ware. Chester Shepard died in 1902 and the business was continued by Chester B. Shepard and after a family disagreement by his brother Llewlyn until the closure of the factory in 1923 |

SHREVE & CO - San Francisco, CA Business started in 1852 by George C. and Samuel Shreve.
Until the 1880s the firm was focused on retailing. By 1881, when Albert J. Lewis entered in the partnership, they opened a factory for the producion of jewelry and, from 1883, of silverware. The firm was incorporated in 1894. In 1908 they purchased Vanderslice & Co. In 1912 the company was sold to the J.E. Hickingbotham family and in 1967 to Dayton Hudson of Minneapolis.
