	HE over & Co into a quatrefoil Hawksworth, Eyre & Co -Charles Hawksworth & John Eyre- Sheffield 1850 c. hallmark Founded in 1833 by Charles Hawksworth and John Eyre as successors of Blagden, Hodgson & Co. The partnership was dissolved in 1869 and the business was continued by James Kebberling Bembridge, Thomas Hall and George Woofhouse. In the 1870s the firm was converted into a limited liability company under the style Hawksworth, Eyre & Co Ltd. The firm went into liquidation in the 1930s.

	HEB over FEB into a shield Barker Bros (Herbert Edward Barker & Frank Ernest Barker) Sheffield 1925 hallmark Chester 1921 hallmark Founded in Birmingham by Mary Barker in 1801. The business was continued by her son William in partnership with Creed as Barker & Creed and after the dissolution of the partnership between Thomas and Matthias Barker the firm traded from 1885 under the style Barker Brothers. The firm was converted in 1907 into a limited liability company under the style Barker Brothers Silversmiths Ltd. In 1921 the firm was amalgamated with Levi & Salaman and in the 1930s acquired Ellis & Co (Birmingham) Ltd. Later the name of the firm was changed to Barker Ellis Silver Co Ltd.

MORE on the tutorial: HOW TO READ ENGLISH/BRITISH STERLING SILVER MARKS

The hallmarking of British silver is based on a combination of marks that makes possible the identification of the origin and the age of each silver piece manufactured or traded in the UK. The marks are:

Town mark, corresponding to the mark of the Assay Office that has verified the piece

Lion passant guardant or Britannia or lion's head erased, certifiying the silver quality

Maker's mark, identifying the silversmith presenting the piece to the assay office (usually the initials of Christian name and surname of the silversmith)

Date letter, in cycles of twenty letters of the alphabet of different shape identifies the year in which the piece was verified by the Assay Office

A further mark was used in the period 1784 - 1890: Sovereign head ('duty mark'), certifying the payment of the duty
