The firm was established in Sheffield in 1809 under the style of Furnyss, Pole & Turner and from 1823 it traded as William Briggs. From 1858 it was managed by William Briggs and Samuel Roberts under the style Roberts & Briggs. In 1863 Roberts continued the business in partnership with Charles Belk under the style Roberts & Belk. In 1901 the firm was convertd to Roberts & Belk Ltd.

Founder of the firm was John Wickes in 1722. In 1802 Robert Garrard (senior) took the control of the firm active in Panton Street, Haymarket, London. In 1818 he was succeed by his three eldest sons, Robert Garrard Jr, James Garrard and Sebastian Garrard trading as R, J & S. Garrard. The firm became R. & S. Garrard in 1835, R. & S. Garrard & Co in 1843 and Garrard & Co Ltd in 1909. In 1952 the firm was amalgamated with Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd.

Robert Gray & Son,
Robert Gray began to work in Glasgow 1776 when he became a freeman. He opened a new business in 1802 under the style Robert Gray & Son. The firm used the Edinburgh Assay Office until 1819, after which and until 1852 their work was assayed exclusively in Glasgow.

The hallmarking of British silver is based on a combination of marks that makes possible the identification of the origin and the age of each piece.
The marks are:

Town mark, corresponding to the mark of the assay office that has verified the piece
London town mark Sheffield town mark Birmingham town mark Newcastle town mark Dublin town mark Edimburgh town mark Glasgow town mark

Lion's passant guardant or Britannia or lion's head erased certifiying the silver's quality
lion passant: 1598-1820 lion passant: after 1820 Britannia and lion's head erased: from 1697 to 1718
Maker's mark, identifying the silversmith presenting the piece to the assay office

Date letter, in cycles of twenty letters of the alphabet of different shape identifies the year in which the piece was verified by the assay office
